Psalm 124:1–2 (NLT) — 1 What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat: 2 What if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us?

I heard a story about a wealthy lady named Edith who was a Christian but not a very happy one. Edith had a friend who was not wealthy in fact she just made enough money to get by, but she was a joyful, enthusiastic Christian.

One day Edith says, “You know Mary, if you thought more about the future you wouldn’t be so joyful. Mary says, “What do mean?” Well what if you got sick and couldn’t go to work for a while, or what if your rent was raised, or what if you employer moved away or what if…”

“Stop, shouted Mary, I never ‘what if. The Lord is my shepherd and I know I shall not want. You know what Edith, it is all those ‘what ifs’ that are making you miserable why don’t you just give them up and trust the Lord?”

Aren’t you glad that as a Christian you don’t have to live in the ‘what if’s’. You know that God is for you and not against you. You know that you are very valuable to Him because he gave His son Jesus to purchase your freedom. You know that God will never leave you or forsake you. You know that He loves you as much as he loved Jesus. You know that your times are in his hands. You know that nothing can separate you from the love of God. You know that He is working all things out for your good because you belong to Him and you love and trust Him. You know that His grace is sufficient for you. You know that Jesus is preparing a place for you in heaven. You know that trouble is working for you and not against you. You know that you have a whole cloud of witnesses cheering you on. You know that nothing is to difficult for the Lord. You know you can never escape the eyesight of your heavenly Father. You know that you are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people designed to show forth the good works of God. You know that you are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. You know that one day you will be like Jesus for you will see Him as He really is.

With your mind occupied with all the things that you know, you don’t have room in your mind for any ‘what if’s’. How sweet is that? 🙂

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) — 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) — 3 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

Psalm 112:7–8 (NLT) — 7 They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. 8 They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly.
