I remember a time back when I was a teenager and my dad and I were walking in downtown Fergus Falls. It was back in the day when there were many retail stores in the downtown. Well on this particular day my dad for some reason chose to wear a hair net on his head. It looked so weird and I was ashamed of walking alongside him. It was so embarrassing to be see with him by my peers. I was at that age when being seen with your parents was not cool. I was the type of person who actually cared what other people thought.Perhaps most of you can relate to that.

2 Timothy 1:8 (NLT) — 8 So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News.

Just by reading this letter I got the impression that Timothy could be a person that would give in to fear and at times he would act very timid. Paul exhorts him to not be timid or fearful or be ashamed or embarrassed to tell others about Jesus. Now Timothy was living at a time when being a follower of Jesus could get you persecuted or put in jail and even killed. That is why Paul was in jail because he wasn’t ashamed to admit that he was a follower of Jesus.

Some people had left hanging out with Paul because they were ashamed to associate with him for fear they would also be thrown in jail. Sometimes I would be embarrassed when I was with dad and he would begin talking to people about Jesus. O what a mess I was! Being ashamed of Jesus can have dire consequences. Listen to what Jesus had to say about being ashamed or embarrassed.

Luke 9:26 (NLT) — 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.

When we don’t speak out the message of Jesus or speak highly of him or let people know that he is the most important person in our lives; according to Jesus this is being ashamed of Him. We harvest what we plant. In the above verse  Jesus said if we plant ashamedness we will harvest ashamedness.

We are the sinners. We are the ones who severed our relationship with God. We are the ones who weren’t seeking him. We were dead in our trespasses and sins. Our righteousness was like a filthy rag and yet listen to this.

Hebrews 2:11 (NLT) — 11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.

In spite of all the shameful and embarrassing things we were involved in and all the impure thoughts that we were thinking, Jesus went to the cross and died for us that we might become his brothers and sisters. Instead of being ashamed of us he welcomes us into the family! Jesus is not ashamed or embarrassed to walk down the street with us no matter what we are wearing. And when the devil accuses us Jesus is the one who sticks up for us.

When you think about all that Father God and Jesus have done for us how can we be ashamed of them? How can we not speak proudly of our brother. Don’t let the enemy shame you into thinking you can’t speak for the Lord because of your past or your present. It doesn’t matter what other people think of you. It only matters what Jesus thinks of you and he thinks you are pretty special. 🙂

Repent of your ashamedness. Repent of your embarrassment. Repent of your timidity. Remember that you have the Holy Spirit living in you. He is not timid or fearful so open your mouth and let him speak through you.

Romans 1:16 (NLT) — 16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.

There is power the name of Jesus and there is power in the words of Jesus. Unleash the power!

Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) — 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Hebrews 13:21 (NLT) — 21 may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
